By the time Dr. David Michalak decided to attend medical school and become a family physician, he had already been working as a nurse for over a decade in emergency departments and intensive care units.
He knew at that time that he really wanted to establish a practice where he had the chance to sit down with his patients, get to know them, and follow up with their medical care over the long term. After completing his residency at the Methodist Family Medicine program in the Texas Medical Center in 2006, he opened up his own family practice in 2007.
At Dr. Michalak’s office, he and his staff take pride in the personal, individualized approach they take with each patient. They purposefully designed their office with a small waiting room because they don’t believe double-booking appointments or making people wait. Patients really appreciate that Dr. Michalak takes his time to get to know them and never rushes through appointments. He says, “My patients are on time and I am on time. I take my time with each patient to get to know them as a person. I see myself as not as treating a disease, but treating a person who has a disease.”
In addition to his family practice, Dr. Michalak has a secondary board certification in sleep medicine, and treats sleep disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia, parasomnias (e.g. sleepwalking), nightmares, REM behavior disorder, and narcolepsy.
Dr. Michalak is a native of the Houston area and lives in The Woodlands with his wife and two daughters. When he’s not helping patients, he enjoys beekeeping, blueberry farming, carpentry, and woodworking.
